Cervical Screening
Cervical screening (Smear test) is a test, to check the health of your cervix, and help prevent cervical cancer.
During your appointment, your healthcare professional will use a speculum, to look at your cervix and take a small sample of cells using a brush.
The samples will be checked at the lab for High Risk types of HPV (human papillomavirus). It is important to check for high risk types of HPV as these can cause changes to the cells in your cervix.
In the event that high risk HPV is found, but your cells are normal, you will be invited to have your next smear sooner then the routine 3yrs. They may rebook you in 12months instead.
In the event that high risk HPV is found and your cells are abnormal, you may be invited to have a test called Colposcopy, which can take a more detailed look at your cervix using a camera and abnormal cells can be treated.
